Creating a Successful Mixed Perennial Border 10:00am – 11:30noon at Hayden Conference Center, SC Botanical Garden, Clemson. Combining flowering shrubs, trees, and herbaceous perennials in a border with year-round interest doesn’t have to be complicated, but requires paying attention to seasonal form, plant characteristics, and design elements. Join Director of Education Lisa Wagner to learn how to create a successful mixed perennial border that’s attractive all year. $15 ($10 for members and volunteers) Register at the SC Botanical Garden website.

A Full Day of Concerts plus a Native Plant Hike at Hagood Mill Hagood Mill’s “First Saturday” in September starts with a nature walk, then a concert  and caps the day with a very special “Pickin’ in the Evening Shade”. The Pickens County Cultural Commission invites one and all for a Native Plant Hike then two free concerts during one day at the Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center. On Saturday, September 4, you can start your day at the mill by taking a leisurely stroll along the Hagood Mill Nature Trail. With our trail leader, Joe Townsend, you will learn some of the identification, Folklore and Natural History of the native plants, trees and shrubs found in the Carolina Upcountry. If you’d like to join in a free morning stroll with this outstanding naturalist, just be at the Hagood Cabin porch at 10:00 a.m.  The music will start at Noon in the Visitor Building with the Mill’s First Saturday “house concert” with Hagood Mill regular, Steve McGaha, featuring the SC Folk Heritage Award winning blues guitarist (and maybe, a few friends). Steve plays folk, blues and old time stringband music on the flat-top and resophonic guitars and is one of the best proponents of “Piedmont Blues” in the region.  Seating is limited, so come early to see and hear some great pickin’ and singin’ in an intimate, close setting. This concert will run until 2:00 p.m.  “Pickin’ in the Evening Shade” concert on the outdoor stage from 6:30 till’ 8:30 p.m. in concert, “Fayssoux McLean and the New Legacy Duo”.

Creative Taste of Spartanburg in Downtown Spartanburg from 5:00pm - 10:00pm. Restaurant Row featuring Spartanburg restaurants and chefs; a “Cook’s Corner” featuring all things food, beverages, and gadgets for sale; “Made in Spartanburg” area highlighting local cookbooks, bake sales, produce and more. Also featured is a wine tasting by Carriage House Wines with more than 60 different wines from around the world. The flavor of Art Market features local and regional painters, potters, photographers, jewelry makers and textile artists. A favorite area at Creative Taste is the “Lemonade Stand,” where children can create their own chef hats, decorate cookies and make edible necklaces. Face painting, games and prizes are offered. Field Trip: Courthouse Falls Trail 9:00am Hike with the SC native Plant Society. Courthouse Falls is a 45' waterfall located in the Pisgah National Forest in NC. It is accessed via Sumney Cove and Courthouse Falls Trails. Dog-hobble, wood betony, galax, violets, jackin- the-pulpit, wood anemone, sweet shrub, rhododendron and yellow birch are some of the plants we expect to see along the trails. This outing has two options: 1/4 mile (described as moderate) to view the main falls, and 6 miles (moderate with a short strenuous section) to explore additional natural beauty. A Course in Miracles: The Movie 2:00 pm Unity Church of Greenville, 207 E. Belvue Rd, Taylors.  Unity First Sunday Cinema. FERN-PRINTING 9:00am–10:30am at Hanson Nature Learning Center, SC Botanical Garden, Clemson. In this fern-printing workshop, we will follow in the footsteps of the Victorians and experience a taste of “pteridomania <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pteridomania>,” a mania for ferns. Participants will explore the variety of ferns in the Garden and, under the guidance of garden staff, gather specimens to “print” without ink. Bring a t-shirt, pillow case, cloth napkin or other white item to decorate, and a ordinary metal hammer to discover this simple, yet dramatic, craft. $15 ($10 for members & volunteers) per session. Greenville's Air Quality 6:00pm at Coffee Underground. The monthly meeting of Green Drinks Greenville will feature a talk by Sandra Yudice from the offices of reenville County. She will discuss Greenville's air quality, how we affect it and what those "ozone warnings" really mean.

The Ultimate Locavore Pizza Party 5:00pm - 8:00pm at Barley's Taproom, downtown Greenville. Presented by Edible Upcountry Magazine. Roz Savage, Ocean Rower 12:00pm - 1:30pm at The Westin Poinsett, 120 S. Main Street, Greenville. Cost: $20, includes lunch. Roz Savage is a British ocean rower, author, motivational speaker, and environmental campaigner. She has rowed solo across the Atlantic Ocean and is the first woman to complete a solo row across the Pacific. Upstate Forever is thrilled to host Roz for an exclusive lunch at the Westin Poinsett! "Udderly Delicious!" 11:00am at The Children's Museum of the Upstate, 300 College Street, Greenville. A Slow Food Upstate taste education sponsored event for Kids. Join the Happy Cow family at The Children's Museum of the Upstate for a fun day of dairy discovery. Cost: included with museum admission. Applicable Ages for Event: target is 6+, but this is not a requirement. What do cheese, milk, ice cream, and yogurt have in common? They all start with cows. In this program sponsored by Slow Food Upstate featuring Happy Cow Creamery, kids will learn about and taste a variety of dairy products that come from cows. The Mighty Oaks 7:00pm – 8:00pm Meet at Hanson Nature Learning Center, SC Botanical Garden, Clemson. Oaks are vital for the survival of many species of wildlife; what is less widely known is the historical importance of acorns to humans. In this informal evening program, they will visit a variety of oaks in the South Carolina Botanical Garden. On the journey, they explore the importance of acorns to Native Americans and early settlers, and learn how they turned acorns into a life-sustaining flour. $7 ($5 for members and volunteers) Register at the SC Botanical Garden website.

Fransican Monastery of St. Clare Green Building Tour 12:00pm - 1:30pm, 37 McCauley Rd, Travelers Rest. Monthly meeting of the SC USGBC. Franciscan Monastery of Saint Clare is the first monastery in the United States to be awarded LEED certification. Located on 14 acres in the Upstate, of South Carolina, the new Monastery is a one-story structure that features two courtyards offering views to exterior gardens. The tour will start with everyone gathered in the Chapel for an introduction to the project by Sisters Nancy and Cathy,  residents and Owner’s representatives, during design and construction. Three groups will be formed for a tour of the public facilities and grounds with discussion of LEED credits earned and lost. Moonshiner 5K Night Race 8pm at Paris Mountain State Park. "The only nighttime trail race in the Southeast!" sponsored by Half Moon Outfitters. Rainbow Falls Hike, Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area South Carolina's Rainbow Falls, which is on YMCA Camp Greenville property, drops 100 feet over steep walls streaked with black and tan from the alternating layers of amphibolite, schist and gneiss. Join John Park, Foothills Trail Conference board member, on a strenuous 5-mile round-trip hike. Meet 10 a.m. at the Jones Gap State Park Education Center. (S.C. State Park Service parking fee required.) Bring lunch, snacks, water and appropriate clothing and footgear.

Workday: Tyger River Clean-up 9:00am – 2:00pm The Tyger River is a beautiful, wild river that courses through the heart of the Piedmont and provides sanctuary and habitat for an abundance of wildlife and native plants. On Sept 18 the South Carolina Native Plant Society will participate with our conservation partners to clean up a large section of the Tyger River. Volunteers are needed. Walk the shore and river to retrieve litter. Enjoying the natural beauty and fellowship while working is permitted! Meet folks from the Sierra Club, Upstate Forever, SC Native Plant Society and The Tyger River Foundation to help remove litter and tag large items to be removed by the US Forest Service. There is light and heavy work to be done. Everyone 18 yrs and over (younger if accompanied by a parent) can contribute. Closed-toe shoes are a must. Bring gloves, water and a snack for work hours (9:30-12:30). The cleanup session will be followed by a cookout at 1:00 pm.  There will be shuttles from Greenville and further Upstate to take folks to Rose Hill Plantation Historic Site for 9:00 am instructions. Searching for Fossils 10:00am – noon at paris Mountain State Park, Park Center. Presenter: Dr. Brandis Hartsell, Roper Mountain Science Center. Dr. Hartsell will explain how fossils are formed, where to look for them and how to find them. She will also have samples of Carolina fossils to examine. The program will end with a table top “mini fossil dig.“

PLANTS OF THE CHEROKEE WORLD VIEW GARDEN 7:00pm – 8:00pm Meet at the Cherokee Worldview Garden (adjacent to the Discovery Center parking area), SC Botanical Garden, Clemson. Visit the recently dedicated Cherokee Worldview Garden and learn about the complex culture of the Cherokee and the place of plants in their lives.   This is a unique garden which embodies and honors the dynamic culture of the first human beings to inhabit this area. Insect Pest Management for Sustainable/Organic Vegetable Production 9:00am - @4:00pm at Presbyterian College, 503 South Broad St, Clinton, SC. (Meeting room to be announced) This one-day course will focus on management of insect pests. Participants will learn about techniques for sampling and identification of pest and beneficial insects, will have an opportunity to collect insects in the field, and with direction will run through identification procedures using a hand lens and/or microscope (participants will receive a hand lens to take home). Participants will also learn about specific cultural practices to prevent insect pest problems without use of insecticides, and there will be ample time for questions and discussion about insect pest management problems and solutions. Participants will also tour the Parson Produce operation at Bush River Farm in Clinton, and will learn about the Farm insect pest management program from Daniel Parson. Registration for non-extension personnel is $25 which includes lunch and a hand lens to take home (fee waived for Clemson and SCSU Extension agents).  Registration deadline is September 21. Regional Vision Summit 9:00am - 12:00pm at Carolina First Center. (Registration will be open beginning in mid-August) This meeting will serve as the kickoff to the second major community outreach element of the year-long regional visioning effort. Following the Summit, 12 Community Forums will be held across the region during October and November to solicit additional input and feedback from residents about "What Matters Most" as we look toward the future of the Upstate. The full Community Forum schedule will be announced in early August. Stormwater Solutions Speakers Series: The Use of Native Vegetation for Site Stabilization 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Location: Hampton Memorial Library, Easley. Cost: Free; pre-registration required. Working with Piedmont Soils 10:30am – 12:00noon at Nature Learning Center, SC Botanical Garden, Clemson. Depending on location, history, and maintenance, the ‘soil’ in your existing landscape may be fine for basic planting, but building soil health is usually essential for a garden to flourish. 2nd Annual Harvest Festival at Greenbrier Farms 10:00am - 3:00pm, 772 Hester Store Rd, Easley. Celebrate the start of Autumn and this year's bountiful harvest with hayride tours, kids activities, festive music, and a day at the farm. A cornucopia of fresh produce and cuisine will be available for purchase: brick-oven pizza, grass-fed beef burgers, an assortment of GBF baked goods, pumpkins and more.

4th Annual Upstate On-Farm Dinner presents: OktoberFresh! at Patient Wait Farms, Piedmont, SC. In a reinvention of an Upstate favorite farm event, OktoberFresh pairs acclaimed local chefs with the freshest ingredients from area farms in a harvest festival setting. Hosted by CFSA farm members Gail & Michael Cooley of Patient Wait Farms, OktoberFresh promises fine cuisine and autumn festivities all in a delightful farm setting. PLANTS FOR POLLINATORS: BUTTERFLIES, BEES, AND HUMMINGBIRDS 10:00am – 12:00noon at Hanson Nature Learning Center, SC Botanical Garden, Clemson. The Children’s Garden includes many pollinator-friendly plants in the new Butterfly Garden, the Ethnobotany Garden, and the recently renovated Pollinator Border. Learn about these plants from Lisa Wagner in an informal workshop focused on gardening for pollinators. We’ll talk about plant characteristics, look at examples, and discuss ways to support pollinators in your home garden. $12 ($8 for SCBG members & volunteers) Register at the SC Botanical Garden website.

Understanding Plants 10:30am – 12:00noon at Hayden Conference Center, SC Botanical Garden, Clemson. Discover why some plants thrive in sun and some in shade, how plant reproductive strategies differ among species (and how this affects gardening), how plants are classified, and other interesting things about plants that are helpful to gardeners. This is a program focused on a better understanding of plants as part of a garden ecosystem. $15 ($12 for members) Register at the SC Botanical Garden website.

Evening Sky Walk 7:00pm – 9:00pm Meet at Discovery Center parking area, SC Botanical Garden, Clemson. Stars and planets are the most evident on new moon nights, clouds permitting. Join Lisa Wagner to experience the sights, sounds and sensations of a fall evening. Please wear shoes and clothing appropriate for walking in the woods. Flashlights are not needed. $7/family (up to 5) ($5 for members & volunteers)

Chattooga Belle Farm Farm-to-Table Dinner  5:00pm - 8:00pm at Chatooga Belle Farm, 454 Damascus Church Rd, Long Creek, SC. Chattooga Belle Farm will be hosting a A portion of the ticket sales will benefit the Chattooga Conservancy. This grassroots organization, formed in 1991, works to protect the watershed of the National Wild & Scenic Chattooga River. The dinner will be held outside with the Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop. Guest Chef Chris Willis of La Bastide will prepare a four course meal with fresh, local ingredients all sourced with-in 50 miles of the farm. Local vendors include Tokeena Angus, Split Creek Farms, City Scape Winery and Harmony Dairy. Tickets are $80 per person or $140 per couple. Children's Program: FAIRY HOUSE FESTIVAL 10:00 am – 12:00noon at Children’s Garden (start at Hanson Nature Learning Center), SC Botanical Garden, Clemson. Join Education staff in the Children’s Garden for a family event filled with imagination and creativity. Eastatoee Creek Heritage Preserve/The Narrows with the Foothills Trail Conference 10:00am Join Richard Cain of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources as he leads a strenuous round-trip hike of around 5.5 miles into Eastatoee Creek Heritage Preserve and to a new viewing area (that is currently under construction) for The Narrows, a scenic spot on Eastatoee Creek. Meet 10 a.m. at the Foothills Trail parking lot on Horsepasture Road, off US 178 at Laurel Valley. Bring lunch, snacks, water, and other appropriate clothing and footgear.
